There are two kinds of paint by numbers kits: kits where you mix some colors yourself, and no-mix paint by numbers kits, where every color comes ready in its own numbered pot. All Judy Paint kits are no-mix. Here is why that matters.
What does no-mix mean?
Every color in the picture has its own pot, already mixed and labeled with a number. You never need to combine two paints to create a third. Open the pot, paint the section, close the pot.
Why pre-mixed paints make painting easier
The colors match the picture
Mixing the same shade twice is surprisingly hard, especially for skin tones, skies or fur. With pre-mixed paints, every section with the same number has exactly the same color.
You do not need color theory
Matching undertones takes practice. With no-mix kits you can enjoy painting without learning to mix first.
Less waste, less mess
No palette full of half-mixed colors and no guessing how much you need. You simply use what is in each pot.
More time for the painting itself
Instead of mixing, you spend your time filling sections, blending edges and adding your own touches.
Want to learn mixing anyway?
Great. A no-mix kit is a good teacher: you can study how the colors next to each other create light and shadow. Our article learn to paint with paint by numbers shows how to practice tints and shades on your own canvas.
Keep your paints fresh
- Close every pot right after use.
- If a paint feels a little thick, add one drop of water and stir.
- Store the kit at room temperature, away from direct sun.
Fixing common paint issues
- Paint feels thick: add one drop of water, stir and test on the edge of a section.
- Streaky coverage: let the first coat dry, then add a second thin coat.
- Numbers shine through: light colors often need two or three coats.
- Two shades look alike: paint a small test dot next to the number on the reference sheet and compare in daylight.
